My family and I love watching the British Bake Off where the “prize” is a glass cake stand.
I was rummaging about my shop one afternoon and saw these two pieces of wood sitting next to each other and immediately knew what they needed to be. This cake stand.
The base is made from a piece of rich and dark black walnut. It is pinned and epoxied to the top. The top is made from some figured maple. There is a flame grain patten playing across the top going perpendicular to the grain.
The top is 13 inches across and the whole stand is about 5.5 inches tall.
It is finished with my multi-layer process of tung oil, shellac, and enamel.
Do not submerge in water — I can’t guarantee that this will like that and may react in an unexpected way. I recommend wiping any dirtied surface with a damp rag and then drying it off immediately. The enamel and other finishes should help protect this for use (and I do want you to use this for serving cake.
